Chief Askew's Diary: April 12, 1930
Sixty businesses band together to try to improve economic conditions
Chief Askew observed that it was “by far the warmest day we have had so far this spring,” and that had drawn lots of “Country People” to town. “They have had a pretty week to work and most of them ought to be pretty well up with their work.” Were they shopping at the stores around Newnan’s picturesque square? He doesn’t say.
Local business men had formed a merchants association, and took out a full-page ad in the Newnan Herald proclaiming their plans. Paid subscribers can read on about this small-town effor to fight the Great Depression.
