This Easter weekend began peacefully with Newnan Police Chief Walter Askew writing that there was “very little doing in our line,” on Saturday. But his prediction of “a fine day for Easter (Sunday)” proved very wrong. At about 8:30 Saturday evening, an attempted robbery of an old man from an adjoining county led to a fracas that cost one Newnan man his life and another a severe gunshot wound. It had to be the most sensational crime of many years in the small city south of Atlanta.
