It was “Fair and a little cooler this a.m. than it was yesterday,” Chief Askew began his diary entry. Indeed, the Atlanta Constitution, based 40 miles away, projected a high of just 79. There was “very little doing” at the police department, so he worked some in his home garden in the morning.

There may have been a depression on, but high school and college graduates still needed to know what time it was. H.S. Banta, “The Newnan Jeweler,” urged its customers to present male grads with a Gruen Varsity.
