Chief Askew's Diary: April 5, 1930
A day of school games is rained on; Kiwanis Club entertains Civil War veterans
It was a Saturday of cold rain and “very disagreeable,” Chief Askew wrote in his diary. This was a shame, because there was a county-wide school athletic meet planned at the old fairgrounds and “lots of People from [the] country” had come into Newnan to attend.
Earlier in the week, the Kiwanis Club of Newnan had invited Confederate veterans of the Civil War to be their guests at a special dinner. This postage stamp, issued in 1951, commemorated the final reunion of the United Confederate Veterans. By then even boys who had served as buglers and drummers were old men.
