With no rain in sight, Newnan Police Chief Askew was preoccupied again today by the terrific Georgia heat and lack of rain. “Think maybe we will have some rain now before long,” he wrote optimistically.

Merchants in Newnan were advertising various wares and services that would make the heat tolerable. Paid subscribers can read on about how Southerners managed in the days before air conditioning.
