Chief Askew wrote on the “Hottest day we have had this summer” that the car stolen from Warm Springs the night before had been quickly recovered in the nearby town of Manchester. “They caught two young men in the Car, claimed they borrowed it for a ride,” he wrote. (This was called a “joy ride” at the time rather than car theft.) The owner told the police officer to “release them on payment of their costs.”
