Although all Chief Askew wrote about in his diary today was a day of off-and-on-again rain, a great advancement in utility service was announced by the general manager of the Georgia Natural Gas Corporation. Pipes were going to be laid in Newnan immediately, and gas service would be available within 90 days.

Chief Askew would comment repeatedly over the next few weeks about the arduous work of digging ditches and laying pipe under the hot summer sun. Paid subscribers can read on about what this advancement meant for the people of Newnan.
