Chief Askew wrote in his diary that it was a rainy Monday, and the Mayor’s Court that convened at 9 a.m. resulted in cash fines of $50 paid “and those that did not pay out amounted to a little over fifty dollars.” I guess they had to serve time in the jail.

Among the news items in the May 16 Newnan Herald was a brief notice that a local manufacturer would be turning out “many thousands of” miniature bales of cotton. Paid subscribers can read on about the demand for these souvenirs of the South. Click below to upgrade.

The mini-cotton bale being offered here by a dealer on eBay is probably similar to the ones Cole Novelty turned out.
