On Sunday, Chief Askew and five other men went to Atlanta to attend a rally of the United Spanish-American War Veterans, held at a hall owned by an organization with the exotic name of the Improved Order of Red Men. Their meeting site was known as a “wigwam.”

“They had an open meeting and a large crowd. Everybody had a very nice time,” he wrote.
