“Our Business still very dull,” Chief Askew wrote in his diary, noting that there had not even been a Mayor’s Court that morning. He was still hoping for rain.

Earlier in the week, future president Franklin Delano Roosevelt drove through town with a small entourage, which was reported in the Newnan Herald along with other news of the week. This obviously posed photograph from a 1928 newspaper shows the newly elected governor of New York taking a picture of his secretary, Marguerite LeHand, at Warm Springs. Roosevelt is leaning against the car to disguise the fact that he couldn’t stand or walk un-aided due to paralysis from polio. This photo appeared in my book The Gatekeeper, with the gracious permission of Missy LeHand’s family. Incidentally, I will be giving a talk, impersonating LeHand, at the Wesley Woods senior living community in Newnan on Friday, May 30 at 2 p.m. It is open to the public.
