During this month in 1918, the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the final Allied push to end the Great War — later known as World War I — was taking place. The war, a virtual meat-grinder of young men, would end with the Armistice on November 11. Some 9.7 million members of the military of the combatant countries died, plus about the same number of civilians.
