Between the dousing he and Julia Anne gave his garden with the hose and some rain showers in the evening, the garden was lovely, Mr. Lanham wrote. He had time to prune a boxwood hedge before he headed to the Lanham and Sons store on Broad Street. “Good trade at the store,” he wrote optimistically.
