He writes of the roses as if they were friends

Mr. Lanham ticks off the names of his rose bushes as if they were friends. Today he mentions George Dickson and Gloire de Dijon, and added that his spiraea is “at its loveliest.” Many bushes are budding, “but the very cold late spring has retarded things.” Here is an artist’s rendering of the Gloire de Dijon, also known as the Old Glory Rose.
