It was a Saturday, and Papa Lanham made a brief appearance at his Rome department store, Lanham & Sons. I bet he got a hero’s welcome. “Business good today,” his son wrote. A Mr. Hays, who had stepped in to manage things while Mr. Lanham went to care for his father in New York, had treated the business “like it was his own.”
