It was a clear and warm Sunday in Rome. Before church, Mr. Lanham cut a few roses, commenting that the color of the Etoile de Hollande was “wonderful.” Attendance at Sunday school was 261.

That afternoon, the elder Lanhams came by for ice cream, then the family loaded up in the car and drove to Horseleg Creek to dig up some ferns for Anne’s planter boxe…
