Julia Anne was up and in good spirits today. She helped her father water the flowers with a new garden hose — he had given up on Mother Nature providing enough rain — and after dinner she sat down at the piano.

“Julia Anne played some of her piano ‘solos’ — Mary Had a Little Lamb, etc., while I played the violin and Mother sang them,” he wrote.
