Business was “fair only” at the Lanham & Sons department store, but Mr. Lanham found pleasure as usual at his home: “Full moon lovely over the garden,” he wrote. The big event, however, was his daughter’s latest accomplishment. “Julia Anne dressed herself this morning for first time — everything but tying her shoes.”
