It was a clear and cold day morning in Rome. Julia Anne was feeling well enough that she visited friends and played for a little while.

Business was “only fair” at Lanham & Sons, and brother Felix and two other employees were still out with the mumps. In between customers, Mr. Lanham worked on an ad for an upcoming $1 sale.
