Up all night with a sick child

Mr. Lanham was up at 3:30 a.m. to see to his daughter, Julia Anne, who was coughing and running a fever of 102 degrees. He went to his mother’s house for mustard and flax to make a poultice, and later brought in Dr. McCord to examine her. “Tonsils and congestion in bronchial tubes causing trouble, he says,” Mr. Lanham wrote.
