A sad day for Papa and Mama Lanham

It was a very hot day — “like real July weather,” Mr. Lanham wrote — and a sad one. His parents began moving from their “lovely home,” which had been foreclosed on by the bank and sold to a Rome businessman. Mr. Lanham was beating himself up for his “folly and extravagance” that he blamed for their situation.
