Mr. Lanham was up at 6 a.m. to bathe, shave and cut a few roses before heading to Lanham & Sons to work. It was a Saturday. “Business a little better than last Saturday,” he wrote.

His father left by train that night for New York “to meet Will Mundy.” No doubt this involved negotiations with the store’s creditors in New York.
