March weather finally showed up, Mr. Lanham wrote. “Wind blew all night preventing frost,” even though, according to the Atlanta newspaper, the low was 21 degrees.

He did some more collecting that day, but again took a break at the Floyd County Courthouse, this time attending the prelimary hearing of a man charged with a Saturday night murder.
