Mr. Lanham rose at 5 a.m. to put out some potted rose plants, including an Imperial Potentate. “Garden is almost all green now,” he wrote. “The roses are not quite so profuse as with the first burst of bloom, and the peonies are gone, except Baroness Schroeder.”
