He beats himself up about the business

Mr. Lanham was decidedly glum today. The maid, Bertie, phoned to tell him she had found a job that paid better and would not be coming in. He cut a rose, but it was “not very pretty in color.” And he had a slight headache all day and did not even feel like eating supper.
