Mrs. Culp had purchased two and a quarter-yards of taffeta the day before to make a slip to wear under the lace dress she was having made by a seamstress.

Today she finished it.

Here's a picture of a 1930s lace dress with a taffeta under-slip, with matching jacket. Elegant! Wouldn’t you stand up straight in such a garment?
