"To celebrate and reciprocate" the friends who had given her such lovely birthday gifts the day before, Mrs. Culp invited them to lunch and cooked some of her German specialties: pellkartoffel (potatoes boiled in their skins) with herrings, beer, harzer kaise (sour milk cheese), coffee and cake.
