“New Year card from Else,” Mrs. Culp wrote. In my initial reading of the diary, this was the first indication I got that Mrs. Culp was Jewish, as she never mentioned attending a synagogue and celebrated Easter with her family. This charming 1920s Rosh Hashanah card, from the website Bowery Boys, features greetings in English and Hebrew.
