Mrs. Gunn’s young son Bob “had a little too much candy and is in bed with an upset stomach,” she wrote today. Curiously, she predicted he would soon come down with a cold “because sugar in excess always starts my children off with a cold.” Good thing sugar rationing was going to begin soon!

At the White House, the Roosevelts and seven guests enjoyed a private showing of the new movie Woman of the Year. Paid subscribers can read on about this delightful film, the first on-screen pairing of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.
