Heat wave blasts the South; newspapers are full of cooling advice

Myra’s husband Sid and son James went to Montgomery today, a Friday. “Ho as blazes,” she commented. She wasn’t kidding; the National Weather Report for that day gave the high as 95, but it had been even hotter the day before, 98.4.

As the South baked, its newspapers were full of advice on keeping cool, including the ad above about making the perfect iced tea, which appeared in the Atlanta Constitution. Paid subscribers can read on.
