It was a stormy afternoon, and Professor Hamilton tried to intercept his daughter Gwennie before she left school so she wouldn’t have to walk home in the rain. Unfortunately, she was let out early and came home with “wet feet and also got her clothes wet.” He got her dried off and changed before heading to the hospital at 5 to pick up Margaret.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in a patent infrigement case that caused them to chuckle. Paid subscribers can read on about what made the Supremes laugh when they weren’t busily dismantling the New Deal.

The photo above was taken in 1937 by Erich Salomon, who smuggled his camera into the courtroom by faking a broken arm and hiding it in the cast. Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes is the gentleman in the center with the beard and whiskers. The picture was accessed through Wikimedia Commons.
