Again the Professor had a scanty diary entry today, remarking only that he taught morning classes, worked at home in the afternoon, and that Margaret went to her violin class.

I doubt either Hamilton was a smoker, but cigarette smoking in the U.S. was on the upswing in the 1930s, as this Chesterfield ad from an issue of the Reading Times testifies. Paid subscribers can read on about the rise and fall of smoking in the United States.
