Professor Hamilton's Diary: April 12, 1935
He picks up his car and pays the bill; Sally Rand makes the news
With another day of break to enjoy, Professor Hamilton worked on his thesis in the morning and evening. In between time, a colleague at Albright College drove him and Mary Elizabeth to her doctor to have her ears dressed, and then took him to the body shop in West Reading where his car was ready for pickup.
The repairs on the door and fender had cost $18.50. In current dollars that translates in $432, which is quite a bargain for a body shop repair. But of course, cars back then were made of metal rather than plastic and panels could be beaten back into shape!
If Professor Hamilton glanced at the Reading Times today, he probably noticed the story about the famous “bubble dancer” Sally Rand, who had become infamous for her artistic peek-a-boo dances at the Chicago World’s Fair. Little did he know that he and Sally would be linked in news stories and headlines later in the year!
