Professor Hamilton's Diary: April 17, 1935
He has a long day of traveling; FDR plays ball; cow mutilation case updated
Professor Hamilton had car trouble this morning and had to call a garage to get his car started. Once on the road, he visited with friends in Whitesboro, New York and shared the mid-day meal with them, then drove to Schenectady to meet with the academic advisor for his dissertation, Dr. Fox.
“He thinks I should have it in hands of Columbia University Press by July 1,” he wrote. “I said I could.” Nothing like the pressure of a deadline to get a thesis moving along!
The professor was very impressed with Dr. Fox’s “beautiful office” and even more by his home, where Mrs. Fox gave him a tour. “It was wonderfully furnished in period designs — colonial, etc.,” he wrote.
Perhaps Professor Hamilton drove across this bridge on his way to Schenectady. This 1937 postcard is being offered by a dealer on eBay.
From Schenectady he drove to Albany, where he had supper at the YWCA — apparently it operated a public cafeteria — and found a tourist hotel where he got a room for the night. This postcard of the YWCA is also being offered by an eBay dealer.
In Washington, President Roosevelt spent the afternoon at the ball park, throwing out the first pitch of the season.
