Professor Hamilton's Diary: April 26, 1935
He is pleased with the honor's banquet outcome; Dutch Schultz awaits trial verdict
The Pi Gamma Mu social sciences honor society banquet was a success, Professor Hamilton wrote in his diary. It was held at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel with about 20 present. Dr. Paul Holmes, the young psychiatrist he had invited to be the speaker, gave a talk on mental health, and “it was quite a good banquet.”
Professor Hamilton was supposed to have a co-chair for the event, and he couldn’t help grousing a bit that he had ended up making “all arrangements,” from engaging the speaker, nailing down the venue and menu to writing and mailing the invitations. I know he was relieved it was over.
On the front page of today’s Reading Times, a wire story reported on the income tax evasion trial of mobster Dutch Schultz, which was being deliberated by a jury in Syracuse, New York. Paid subscribers can read on about what happened to the “Dutchman” in 1935.
The press photo above, showing Schultz leaving the courthouse, is being offered on eBay.
