After recovering from his upset stomach, Professor Lanham spent most of the day working in his yard, cutting the grass. After so many weeks away, it was apparently needing some TLC. “Trimmed hedge in evening,” he concluded.

These peaceful, if tiresome, activities sharply contrast with what was going on in the greater world. Abyssinian — known today as Ethiopia — was bracing for war with Italy and its emperor Haile Selassie begged the west to intervene.
