Professor Hamilton's Diary: Aug. 27, 1935
Mary Elizabeth is sick again; Huey Long has his last hurrah in Congress -- and a favorite cocktail
After a summer of good health, poor Mary Elizabeth was sick again. After a “very restless” night, the Hamiltons called Dr. Landis, who diagnosed tonsilitis. “Said her ears were not infected — which was a great relief,” Professor Hamilton wrote. The rest of the day was taken up with “attending her,” though he did manage to read more of Anthony Adverse.
In Washington, Congress adjourned after Louisiana Sen. Huey Long concluded a five and a half-hour filibuster, killing $100 million in funding for projects from the Social Security old age and disability act to farm bills favorable to cotton and wheat growers. The headline in the Reading Times read “Huey Filibuster Kills New Deal as Session Ends.”
