Professor Hamilton's Diary: Dec. 6, 1935
He participates in a college president's inauguration in Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Professor Hamilton and one of his Albright College colleagues were granted use of “the college Ford” to drive to Lancaster, Pennsylvania today to participate in the inauguration of John A. Schaeffer as sixth president of Franklin and Marshall College. The professor represented both Syracuse University (which is where I believe he received at least one of his undergraduate degrees), and the American Association of University Professors chapter at Albright.
“Marched in the academic procession,” he wrote. “Listened to the exercises; and heards speeches & awards of honorary degrees. Pres. W.M. Lewis of Lafayette College made best address.”
The inauguration was fully covered by the two daily newspaper in Lancaster, including the full text of Lewis’s address and the college’s awarding of its first honorary degree to a woman. Paid subscribers can read on.
The colorful linen postcard showing a “campus view” is being offered by a dealer on eBay.
