With their car damaged and parked in the garage, the Hamiltons didn’t go to church today. They had planned to attend a tea at Albright College, but some friends dropped in with their daughter and they so enjoyed talking “and seeing the children together” that they blew off the tea. He spent the evening studying and listening to the radio.

At the White House, FDR had a long tea-time with the Broadway actor, writer producer and director Eddie Dowling, who would later mount the first production of the then-unknown playwright Tennessee William’s masterpiece The Glass Menagerie.To read about him, you’ll need to be a paid subscriber.
