Professor Hamilton's Diary: Jan. 4, 1935
His father-in-law sends him a shirt and tie; Roosevelt gives a bracing state of the union
Professor Hamilton held classes at Albright College this Friday in the morning and afternoon. At home he received a letter from his sister, Rose, concerning the estate of their sister Irene, who had died in 1933. (Milton and Rose were the youngest of the five Hamilton children; Irene was the oldest.) He also received a shirt and tie from the ritzy B. Altman department store in New York, a gift from his father-in-law. (His own parents died in the late 1920s.) In the evening he taught another class that got him home by 8 p.m. “I read some before retiring,” he concluded.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave his second state of the union speech to Congress at 12:30 p.m. today, accompanied by his son, James, and his top aides. Paid subscribers can read on about his speech and the press conference that followed.
