Readers, I am traveling Wednesday through Sunday so will combine a couple of dates this week.

Daughter Gwendolyn had quite a day. She was innoculated for dyptheria and was promoted to second grade. Of the latter her father wrote, “She was quite elated.” He took Mary Elizabeth to the doctor for “a final look” prior to the family’s decampment to Bronxville, New York on Saturday, then they all had lunch together at the Thomas Jefferson Tea Room downtown. “In the afternoon I worked on typing thesis,” he wrote. This chore would occupy much of his summer.

The actress Gloria Stuart, who made a spectacular comeback at age 87 in the film Titanic, gave birth to her first and only child, a daughter named Sylvia, in Los Angeles. Paid subscribers can read on about this remarkable lady, whose life spanned a century and included a succession of careers.

The publicity photo of Stuart, taken in 1937, was accessed through Wikimedia Commons.
