Professor Hamilton's Diary: March 24, 1935
The family visits at the hospital; Chicago gangs attempt assassination of prosecutor
Professor Hamilton rose late this Sunday morning, and the family did not attend church or Sunday school. After the mid-day meal, they all went to the hospital. It was the first time his mother-in-law and Gwennie had seen Mary Elizabeth since her surgery. “She was very glad to see them and acted much brighter today than yesterday,” he wrote. He left Margaret at the hospital and returned home where he listened to the radio during the afternoon. When he went back to M.E.’s room to fetch Margaret, her supper had come up, but she didn’t eat much.
It was anything but a quiet Sunday in Chicago, where there was an assasination attempt on prosecuting attorney Thomas J. Courtney and a fire in a night club caused a stampede that killed six people and injured many more. Paid subscribers can read on about the mayhem in the Windy City.
