Professor Hamilton got through his classes and came home in the afternoon to take Mary Elizabeth to the doctor. There was a mix-up with their regular doctor, who was thought to be ill, that sent them through a revolving door of office visits, but finally her ear-drum was lanced as well as the mastoid surgery site, which turned out to be badly infected. “It seemed too bad to have to go through this trouble again,” he wrote sadly. They didn’t get her to bed until after 10:30, making for an exhausting day.
