Professor Hamilton's Diary: Oct. 27, 1935
His Sunday is far from leisurely; Americans are concerned about gun violence
The Hamiltons had a busy Sunday. Following Sunday school for the girls and church for themselves — they again hired a babysitter for the latter — they had musical friends over who played the piano “and also accompanied Margaret,” assumedly on the violin. He took one of the musicians, a Dr. F., to the hospital to pick up his daughter, then they came back to the house and stayed until 9:30. “Then I wrote my letter, and these corrections to accompany my contract for tomorrow’s mail,” he said, referring to his book contract. He didn’t get to bed until 1:30 a.m.
The Herbert Block cartoon on that appeared on the front page of the Reading Times referred to the gun violence that was continuing among gangs that got their start in the Prohibition years. Paid subscribers can read on for a comparison of then and now, when gun violence continues to be a major concern.
The Herblock cartoon ran on the Oct. 28, 1935 Reading Times. (The Times did not publish on Sundays.)
