For Professor Hamilton, it was a day of classes and housework. He mowed the lawn and waxed the floors at home. He drove Margaret to her ensemble class and then put the children to bed. After they were asleep, he worked on a speech he was to give the next day to the Peace League of Berks County.

The peace had been broken that very day when the Italian army under dictator Benito Mussolini dropped all pretense of negotiating and invaded the African nation of Ethiopia. It was yet another prelude to the world conflagration known as World War II. Paid subscribers can read on.
