Professor Hamilton's Diary: Sept. 1, 1935
A quiet Sunday at home; President Roosevelt arrives in Hyde Park
Professor Hamilton took daughter Gwennie to Sunday school today but spent the rest of the day at home. After the mid-day dinner, he listened to the radio, cared for Mary Elizabeth, read more of Anthony Adverse, and wrote some letters. “Margaret went out for a walk & came back with news of the Knappers — their leaving to go on a farm,” he wrote. This was probably Joseph S. Knapper, a math and physics professor at Albright College. The names of Professor Knapper and his wife often appeared in the social notes column of the Reading Times prior to September but not afterward, so they must have left Reading completely.
After an overnight trip by train, President Roosevelt arrived in Hyde Park, New York, where he would have a three-week stay at his mother’s home. Paid subscribers can read on about FDR’s lengthy vacations during his presidency.
The vintage postcard of the Roosevelt home, Springwood, is being offered on eBay.
