With the start of classes approaching at Albright College, Professor Hamilton drove to the campus today. There he met the new German professor, who had recently arrived from Europe, and gave him a lift downtown. “Seems pleasant & an intellectual type,” he wrote. This was Dr. Gerrit Memming, a native of Germany, who had been teaching at the University of Illinois. He headed Albright’s German Department for 30 years.

That evening, it was back to home improvements, as he varnished the floors of the parlor and pantry and helped Margaret clean. Mary Elizabeth contined to suffer from her cold.

The aviator and movie producer Howard Hughes set a new record in air speed but almost got killed in the process. Paid subscribers can read on about this and other news of the day.

The picture of Hughes in front of an airplane in the 1940s is from the collection of the Library of Congress, accessed via Wikimedia Commons.
