It was the first day of second grade for Gwennie “and she was glad to begin,” her father wrote. He worked around the house in the morning and that afternoon he and Margaret registered to vote in the primary elections.

In South Carolina, Labor Day activities included a bloody shoot-out at a textile mill in Pelzer, where workers had been on strike since mid-July. Paid subscribers can read on about this sad day in labor history.

The picture of the No. 4 plant of Pelzer Mill, accessed via Wikimedia Commons, dates from 1908. The mill was built in 1895 and demolished in 2004.
