Even though it was Palm Sunday, Thelma and Lowell skipped church as they had become accustomed to doing. They slept late, read the funny papers in the Times-Picayune, ate dinner and sat on the porch. Lowell worked the 3 to 11 p.m. shift and Thelma waited up for him, listening to the radio and writing letters.

It’s interesting that Thelma never mentions reading the news, just the funnies. The Times-Picayune was packed with war news as well as advertisements urging NOLA residents to buy new Easter clothes.
