There was “swell weather” today, Lowell reported, as he again made the diary entry. He set out some more tomato plants in the couple’s Victory Garden. That evening, their friends the Sutherlands and the Wieners came over for an evening of cards, and apparently they made it interesting, as Lowell wrote, “good luck too.”

At the White House, President Roosevelt returned bright and early from a long weekend at his home in Hyde Park, New York. Learn about the remarkable Basil O’Connor, with whom he had lunch today.
