Thelma was back to hanging out with her best friend and neighbor Vangy today while Lowell worked the day shift. They went grocery shopping together, then shared a lunch at home of waffles with syrup, bacon, and coffee. Thelma sent off for some “free books,” then she and Vangy sat on the porch waiting for the mailman to come. Once their husbands returned from work, the couples sat on the porch a while longer, reading the newspaper, and then spent an evening playing the card game Pig and drinking lemonade.

The front page of the Times-Picayune carried the welcome news that coffee rationing had ended the day before. (The above photo illustrates an ad for the Pan-American Coffee Bureau, being offered by a dealer on eBay.) To read on, you will need to be a paid subscriber, which costs just $5 a month. It’s hard to get a decent latte for so little, and you’ll get to read the full Thelma and Lowell while drinking your cup of Joe each morning! Upgrade by clicking below.
